Visually, this type of device resembles a laser blaster, which is often found in science fiction films. That is, at its core, a pyrometer is still the same kind of thermometer known to everyone. Such devices differ primarily in their high level of security, since temperature measurement can be carried out without the need for contact with the surface.
It is appropriate to use such equipment when monitoring the temperature regime at objects with a high risk of electric shock, when working with surfaces where a sharp temperature jump is possible, as well as when using devices with temperature heterogeneity on a regular basis. Due to the fact that in such a device the reading of thermal radiation occurs in the infrared range, pyrometers are able to take measurements at a distance of 15 meters from the object. That is why pyrometers are considered not only safe, but also the most convenient and accurate devices that allow you to record the desired indicators. Thus, we can conclude that the main differences between pyrometers and standard and familiar thermometers are the following factors:
- Pyrometers are capable of operating in the temperature range of -50 to + 3000 degrees;
- Such devices respond within 0.5-1.5 seconds;
- Pyrometers have a low measurement error compared to conventional thermometers.
As for the accuracy of measurements, for pyrometers this indicator varies within 0.1-0.2 degrees, but for a thermometer within 2 degrees.

The principle of operation of pyrometers

Measurements can be carried out from any distance, which is limited only by the diameter of the emitted body and the transparency of the environment. Infrared type pyrometers are capable of operating on the basis of an infrared ray detector. In this case, the temperature of the measured body will directly affect the spectrum and intensity of the radiation. The device of the pyrometer and features of work
The main element of the pyrometer design is the detector of infrared thermal radiation, the intensity and spectrum of which depend on the surface temperature of the measured object. In the device, the built-in electronic measurement system captures the data and displays them later in a format convenient for further analysis. As a rule, a standard pyrometer visually resembles a gun with a small liquid crystal display, which displays the measured temperature values. In general, pyrometers are small and rather compact in size. In most modern versions of pyrometers, among other things, there are also additional functions, such as:
- The presence of internal memory for storing measurements;
- Possibility to determine the minimum and maximum measurement values;
- Sound or visual notification when a parameter reaches a threshold value.
If the data from the pyrometer needs to be further transferred to a computer or to external media, then it provides for the presence of a USB interface.
Classification of pyrometers and their use
The main criteria by which pyrometers are classified include the following indicators:
- Temperature measurement range;
- Method of transportation;
According to the temperature range, pyrometers are classified as high-temperature and low-temperature. The first are used to measure heated bodies with a temperature of more than 400 degrees. The second when determining indicators with a negative value of -35 degrees. Depending on the method of transportation, pyrometers can be portable or stationary. Stationary ones are mainly found in industry and are not subject to further transportation, while portable ones are used in the field and in special laboratories on wheels. According to their purpose, pyrometers are infrared and optical. In infrared there is a laser pointer for precise targeting, and in optical everything happens thanks to the relationship between the color of the radiation and temperature.
