What is the IMG format and how to deal with it?

The IMG file format is a carrier of the complete structural data of a CD / DVD disc and its virtual counterpart, also called a “disk image". It is used in cases where it is not possible to use an optical drive. IMG was used primarily on Mac OS 9, but was later replaced by the DMG format. Despite the fact that most of the disk images use the ISO format for encryption, IMG is not far behind. So, how to open an IMG file and how to do it?

The best programs to open IMG files:

  • Daemon Tools
  • UltraISO

IMG files can either be unpacked before use (using the IZArc program) or mounted into a virtual drive, which will give the impression of running a regular disk.

  1. DaemonTools is perhaps the most widely used disk image mounting software. It has a large number of various add-ons and allows you to both mount an existing image and create a new one. To do this, right-click on the virtual drive shortcut and select "mount". If there is an autorun file in the image, a window will appear on the screen with a suggestion of actions – “Open / play / autorun”, etc., if autorun is not provided, you can open the file manually by finding the mounted image in “Devices and removable media”
  2. UltraISO is in no way inferior to Daemon Tools in functionality and allows not only opening files with the IMG extension, but also converting them to formats such as .bin, .iso, .cue, .nrg, .mdf, .mds, .ccd, .cdi, and this is by no means a complete list.

Using UltraISO differs little from using DaemonTools: you need to right-click on the program logo and select either "burn to disk" or "mount to drive".

Can’t use these programs?

DaemonTools and UltraISO are the best options for working with images, but what program to open IMG files besides them? You can use Nero Burning ROM, Alcohol 120%, Virtual CD, FileViewPro, Apple Disk Utility and many more. The main thing is to choose what suits you in all respects.
